Art?

Before today's discussion I did not think skateboarding was art by any means. I have began to consider it as an art form after today's arguments. I only think the skateboarding done on a professional level is art. The fluidity and arrangement of tricks is critical to their achievement. Like gymnasts and ice skaters, skate boarders are judged based on creativity and aesthetics. This aspect alone made me think about skateboarding as an art.

In football or basketball, points can be scored in a very ugly manner. They are still points no matter how it looks. In a skateboarding competition the skills have to "look good" in order to reach a prestigious level.

I am still not completely convinced that skateboarding is an art, but today made me think about it further.

  1. I do not necessarily think that Skateboarding is art myself, but I do believe that it has artistic tendencies. There was a quote from the Z-Boys video about the blues and how you had to use three chords in a creative manner to make the music your own. Skateboarding was similar because at its outset they only had a few types of tricks and it was how you strung those together that made them cool/original/creative/"artistic". The same could still be said now because there are more moves people can do and in more ways.

Back to what I said about skateboarding not being art is that skateboarding itself is not an art, to me, the way painting or music or dance might be considered an art. However, to truly be a great skater you have to be creative. In the video we watched in class we saw the skate boarder re-imagining a use for everyday objects in to a new purpose... street performance art anyone?

In summation art, of any kind, is one of the most subjective topics you will ever come across. Everyone has an opinion, and everyone is right. This discussion is no exception, and I am sure we could come up with plenty of other "art" related debates within the subcultures we have studied.

  2. I do not necessarily believe that all skateboarders have the goal of making art, however I do agree with Jonah in the sense that skateboarding has artistic tendencies. The arrangement of moves, the use of the environment, and the creativity needed all relate to the artistic element of the subculture.

  3. I never thought of skateboarding as a form of art. However, the skillful skateboarders can perform really beautifully I and can be considered artistic in someway. But it all depends on one's perspective on what is art. If skateboarding is ever considered as art, think it's the amazing skills that are artistic, so not all skateboarding activities are seen as art, only the professional, skillful ones. 1 agree with the idea that art_ should be something that conveys some meanings and provoke people to think deeper when viewing. Therefore, 1 see it more as a sport, which places more importance on better skills, outperform, be competitive and the sport spirits.
