Circle Jerks new documentary
The L.A. punk band has a new documentary coming out. They are featured in American Hardcore several times. I stumbled upon this and thought it might be interesting.
This video coincides perfectly with what we have been discussing in class particularly about the punk scene in general as well as how punk came to be. I expect that when the documentary comes out it will answers many of the questions some of us may still have about what punk really is and how its different from other subcultures. Getting a first-hand account of what it was like to start up a punk band from the members themselves will surely clarify how the punk scene attracted so many followers and how it became so successful. In this video the members of the band seem to really go in detail about what attracted them to the scene and how they rose to the top with a DIY attitude. Personally one of the things that has always confused me was how a band managed to maintain its validity in the punk scene once it got passed its first few basement performances and gained national attention. I know in class we talked about Green Day as an example of a band that had no real commitment to punk but I'll be very interested to see how a band like the Circle Jerks maintained their status even after they became famous. This is assuming that they remained a respectable punk band for an extended period of time but I don't really know anything about them so it will nonetheless be interesting to see how they handled everything.
