How much Hipster can you pack into a Jazz?
I came across this video and thought that it was funny and interesting. It's a car commercial from Australia (unfortunately, we won't be able to buy a Jazz regardless of the effectiveness of this commercial). It seems to be simultaneously making fun of the hipster culture but also possibly marketing a car to it. I'm not sure that I have even wrapped my head entirely around who the commercial's target audience is and if it would be an effective commercial. I think they are trying to showcase the car's roominess and storage abilities but I can't ignore the obvious way that they are making fun of a subculture, especially a subculture that seems so reliant on style and material possessions.

This commercial is unreal. I wonder how effective it is for sales. It is definitely marketed to convey the generic details about the car, but I can't get over the actual making fun of hipsters part. The commercial is playing on the characteristics of this subculture, however, I am more prone to believe that hipsters buy old, used cars to make more of a statement than these new cars or not buy cars at all and rely on bikes, based on what I've personally witnessed.
ReplyDeleteI was interested in the quote from Jack Kerouac towards the end of the commercial. "Great things are not accomplished by those who yield to trends and fads and popular opinions." I feel like this can apply to some subcultures, but I think there are more than a few examples where this statement is actually wrong, where subcultures can do amazing things.
Does anyone else agree/disagree?
Allow me to begin with this: http://twistedsifter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/hipster-kitty-doubts-your-indie-cred.jpg

That being said this commercial is HILARIOUS! it perfectly captures the stereotype of how uptight and ridiculous hipsters are. I don't think that the commercial's target audience is hipsters at all but rather people who would be young enough to know what Hipsters are. The fact that this commercial captures the "hipster" look and attitude so well tells me that someone has done a lot of work to figure out exactly what those are. Definitely involved some "cool hunting" if I had to guess.
hahaha loved the commercial :) hilarious! look at THAT f****** hipster lol has anyone read seen the book and website? its ridiculous. the guy speaking in the commercial even had the ironic facial hair!
ReplyDeletethis commercial definetely portrayed the everyday hipster, and served for a few good laughs as well :) lol but as for the actual message, I would have to agree with Jonah and say that the use of hipsters is to appeal to those of the younger generation that are familiar with the trend. These are the people that are most likely to buy a car based on popular ideas and advertising.
ReplyDeleteI actually think the commercial is aimed at hipsters. It was self-deprecating humor. Hipsterdom has this weird stigma around it where no one actually wants to be called one even though they obviously exist and are prevalent and the commercial plays on that but in a gentle way. Like the part where the guy is like "look at that fucking hipster!" as if the girl was ridiculous for being a hipster when he is one too. This really bothers me. If this is the lifestyle you're living, why are you ashamed of it?
ReplyDeleteAnd also, who knew they had hipsters in Australia?
